How Much Time Do You Actually Spend on the Water? An Honest Breakdown of Side Boat Trips

"The trip lasts about 8 hours" and "we only swam for a short while" can both be true at the same time — and that gap between expectation and reality is behind many disappointed boat-tour reviews on any coast. So let's answer the question directly: how much time do you actually spend on the water in Side? Here is an honest, tour-by-tour breakdown from Side Boat Trips, a direct local operator.

Why "8 hours" never means 8 hours of swimming

The durations we advertise are door-to-door. A group-tour day includes the hotel pickup (typically from around 08:20 in Kizilot to around 09:00 in Side centre — your exact time is confirmed the day before), the ride to the pier, the cruise itself, anchor stops for swimming, lunch served on board and the transfer back. One more thing many guests don't expect: our group boats depart from the Manavgat River pier, not from Side harbour. The day therefore starts with a river cruise before you reach the open sea — not "lost time", but not open-sea sailing either.

Dolphin Island trip: the fullest sea day (~8 hours door to door)

The Dolphin Island boat trip starts with pickup between 08:30 and 09:25 and a cruise down the Manavgat River — watch the branches along the banks, freshwater turtles like to sunbathe on them. Where the river meets the sea, the boat stops for a swimming break of about 1.5 hours. Then it heads into open water for further swimming stops, lunch on board (grilled chicken, rice, salad) and a foam party, returning to the pier between 16:30 and 17:00; you are usually back at your hotel around 17:30. Two honest notes: drinks are sold separately on board, and we never guarantee dolphin sightings — they are wild animals.

Pirate galleon: less sailing, more anchored fun (~7 hours)

The multi-deck wooden galleon leaves the river pier at 10:00, and its character is different by design. Instead of covering distance, it spends a long stretch anchored in the river delta, where the programme happens: treasure hunt, tug-of-war, free face painting, swimming at the shallow point where river and sea meet, a foam party and live music all day. Drinks are available at the on-board bar, there is a children's menu, sea insurance is included and the activities suit kids from about age 3. If you want hours of open-sea cruising, choose another tour; if you are travelling with children, this is the one. It runs on set days of the week — check the booking calendar for current days.

Green Canyon and Suluada: two opposite answers

Green Canyon is not a sea trip at all — and that is exactly its appeal. Of its roughly 7 hours, about 5 are spent on the water of a mountain reservoir: a photo stop at Oymapinar, swimming in refreshingly cool lake water and lunch (meatballs, chicken or fish) at a lakeside restaurant. Soft drinks on the boat are included (drinks at the restaurant are extra), and alcohol is not permitted on this tour. Suluada is the opposite extreme: a full day built almost entirely around swimming in coves off a white-pebble beach known as the "Maldives of Turkey", with lunch served on board. Pickup is in the morning and you return in the afternoon — note that the island itself has very little shade.

Want maximum water time? Charter your own boat

On the private gulet (~7 hours, up to about 50 guests) and the luxury yacht (~6 hours, up to about 25) the route is yours: fewer fixed stops, more swimming in quiet coves, even a sunset departure instead of a daytime run. And if you are still weighing formats, our guide to choosing the right boat tour in Side compares them side by side.

FAQ: time on the water in Side

How long is the swimming stop on the Dolphin Island trip?

About 1.5 hours where the river meets the sea, plus further stops in open water. Life jackets are provided for all ages.

Does the pirate boat sail the open sea all day?

No. It cruises the river and anchors in the delta for most of the programme — deliberately, because calm, shallow water is what makes it ideal for families.

When am I back at my hotel?

After the Dolphin Island trip usually around 17:30; Green Canyon returns around 17:00. Your exact pickup time is confirmed one day before, and the meeting point is normally your hotel's outer gate.

Do I have to pay in advance?

No. Your booking is confirmed instantly, you pay on the day of the tour on the boat — cash or card — and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure.
